Overview

Overview

Working closely with a construction professional who experienced these pain points daily, I embarked on designing a comprehensive mobile solution for field team management. Through extensive user interviews and iterative testing with my primary user, we identified critical gaps in existing tools and developed a focused solution that addressed real-world construction team needs.

The construction industry has been slow to adopt digital tools, often relying on outdated communication methods like radio, phone calls, and paper-based tracking. This creates inefficiencies, miscommunication, and project delays that cost both time and money.

Getting Started

As the sole designer on this project, I knew I needed to deeply understand the unique challenges of construction field work. I partnered with an experienced construction professional who became both my primary research participant and testing collaborator throughout the entire design process.

My approach focused on following established UX methodologies while adapting them to work within the constraints of having a single primary user. This meant conducting more frequent, deeper interviews and creating multiple testing touchpoints throughout the design process.

User Research & Understanding

User Research & Understanding

Through extensive interviews with my construction professional collaborator, I uncovered detailed insights about daily workflows, pain points, and the contextual challenges of working in the field.

Core Issues Identified:

🏋 Communication Patterns

Teams heavily rely on group texts and phone calls, leading to important information getting lost in long message threads.

📊 Progress Tracking

Current methods involve paper forms and end-of-day verbal updates, making real-time visibility impossible.

😌 Technology Adoption

Teams are willing to use mobile tools if they're simple, reliable, and solve real problems without adding complexity.

🟢 Offline Requirements

Construction sites often have poor connectivity, requiring solutions that work offline and sync when connection is restored.

Testing & Iteration

Throughout the design process, I conducted regular testing sessions with my construction professional collaborator, using realistic scenarios and actual job site contexts when possible.

Prototype Testing Approach

Rather than traditional usability testing, I focused on contextual testing where my collaborator would use prototypes during actual work scenarios. This revealed usability issues that wouldn't have been apparent in a lab setting.

Key Iterations

Navigation Simplification: Initial designs had too many menu levels. Feedback led to a flatter navigation structure with quick access to core functions.

Large Touch Targets: Users often wear work gloves, requiring larger buttons and touch targets than typical mobile apps.

Simplified Data Entry: Reduced form fields and implemented smart defaults to minimize data entry time in the field.
